  • Who: Neusa Gostinho Cartaz
  • Profession: Estudante de Engenharia de Nível Superior
  • Location: Universidade de Lúrio, Província de Niassa, Moçambique

In the vibrant environment of the University of Lúrio in Niassa Province, Mozambique, Neusa Gostinho Cartaz is shaping her future. A third-level engineering student from Nampula, Neusa radiates enthusiasm and determination. Since arriving on campus in 2021, she has embraced the opportunities to grow, both personally and academically.

“My journey here has changed everything for me,” Neusa shares. “I didn’t realize that I could achieve so much by just being here.”

Neusa’s passion for the environment is evident in her choice to study forestry engineering. “I like plants,” she says, her eyes lighting up.

“Here, I feel more at ease, and I don’t face many difficulties with my coursework.”

Her genuine interest in this field drives her ambition, allowing her to excel in her studies without feeling pressured.

As she delves deeper into her program, Neusa has developed a keen interest in wood technology, recognizing the potential it holds for sustainable practices in Mozambique. “Working with wood is my favorite. It’s not just about the material; it’s about how we can use it responsibly to benefit our environment,” she emphasizes.

Neusa’s aspirations extend beyond the classroom. Initially contemplating a career in crop management, she has recently shifted her focus towards conservation, logging, and forest management. “I have many dreams,” she confesses.

“Now, I want to be part of the solution for sustainable forestry in Mozambique.”

However, Neusa acknowledges the challenges her sector faces. “We need more practical experience during our studies,” she notes. “The theoretical lessons are essential, but hands-on experience would help us understand better what we can achieve.”

In her daily life on campus, Neusa thrives on the balance between academics and community. “After classes, we often engage in practical activities that bring us closer to our studies,” she describes, her voice filled with enthusiasm. “I love being part of a community that is committed to learning and growing together.”

Neusa is particularly passionate about sustainability and its vital role in the future of her sector. “We, as students, can work together to develop what we have in terms of resources,” she explains. “There is so much potential in using timber and non-timber products sustainably.”

With her sights set on a future where she can influence sustainable practices in forestry, Neusa remains optimistic. “I want to create solutions that not only benefit us now but also preserve our environment for future generations,” she says confidently.

As she navigates her path through education and beyond, Neusa Gostinho Cartaz embodies the spirit of resilience and hope. Her commitment to sustainable forestry and her desire to empower her community paint a promising picture of Mozambique’s future. With her passion for nature and innovative thinking, Neusa is laying the groundwork for a greener and more sustainable Mozambique.
